The clinic is anything but black and white ...we are here to help you with the gray
While physical therapy school can give you a great base of knowledge to draw from it does not give you the clinical reasoning and decision making that only clinical experience can teach you .
Why not maximize that experience with a clinical reasoning process that will maximize your effectiveness and efficiency with every N=1 patient encounter. Each patient is an amazing learning opportunity but if you do not have a clinical reasoning process to work through it is a missed opportunity to maximize that encounter
When we step back and evaluate clinical practice it is a massive gray area. Patients rarely fit the clinical trial we read last week. They often do not respond nearly as well to our techniques as the person on stage last weekend at the continuing education course did
Often we are left scratching our heads at what is the best treatment for each patient in each treatment.
Continuing education courses can give us an endless supply of tools or techniques but do we have a process to apply the right tool to the right patient at the right time?
Have you ever noticed that patients rarely respond as impressively as the demonstration patients on stage at continuing education courses?
The nature of continuing education in physiotherapy has us leaving our families and traveling many miles to be taught technique after technique after technique. While it is not a bad thing to have "tools" in your tool box, they can become meaningless when you do not have a process to apply the right tool to the right patient at the right time.
I was a tool box obsessed physiotherapist. I achieved many certifications and added letters after my name, but I continued to feel like I would not be able to help all of the patients on my caseload. It wasn't until I developed a clinical reasoning process and a modern understanding of pain that I really felt I was able to better understand patients and help those I had previously struggled to help on my caseload.
Clinical trials at times do not resemble our caseloads
Are you able to just pick up and travel to a course?
Clinical practice can be a lonely struggle
If only there was education that followed you to your caseload....
Following continuing education courses I was armed with tools and techniques. There would definitely be patients who would respond nicely to my new found technique but once integrated into practice I felt the same struggle remained with tough patients who didn't resemble the clinical trials populations and people on stage at the continuing education course who responded so impressively to the applied technique.
Do any of your patients look like the people on stage at continuing education courses? In my experience I had some continuing education that had real patients receiving real evaluations and treatments. This was invaluable,
If only I could have brought my continuing education instructor with me to my clinic to help me with my caseload!!!
Learning never was real time. Learning for two days at a course was great, but wouldn't it be even better if your instructor was instructing you while you engaged in practice and helped you real time with your caseload?
Clinical life is an uncomfortable gray area. Things in the clinic never go as smoothly as the textbook or continuing education course made them seem. How many times have you finished your examination and thought, "what the heck do I do with this person?
Clinical reasoning processes are often missing.Tools without a process of application often make them useless. "Teach a man a technique and he will know that technique. Teach a man a reasoning process and clinical framework and he will know a thousand techniques."
Learning was never tailored to our caseload. Clinical trials, while valuable, often do not resemble our population. Our patients rarely resemble the demonstration subjects at courses who respond so beautifully to techniques.
What if continuing education was fit to your caseload, your questions, and your unique needs???
One of the best experiences of my career was fellowship training. Clinical reasoning coursework and pain science were huge AHA moments for me. I was given real time feedback on my caseload. I presented cases and applied the clinical reasoning process.
I actually found less need for more tools as my toolbox became efficient.
Patients got better faster and I was learning so much from each encounter as the clinical reasoning process combined with a modern understanding of pain was maximizing each encounter and I people I previously struggled mightily with now were making much more sense.
I became driven to hone this reasoning process and read voraciously to better understand pain and better understand all that goes into maximizing a patient interaction. I was fitting treatments to patients and not vice versa and the results were so much better.
I was fortunate to then be able to teach clinical reasoning and pain science in my fellowship program. I knew at that time that this information cannot be reserved for fellowship training. This is training that needed to be in entry-level education and early in the career of therapists.

My experience with Mark has been working/interacting with him in professional forums, attending conferences and discussing future collaborations. Mark is highly knowledgeable regarding the modern pain sciences and does a great job educating physical therapists on how to blend that knowledge with manual therapy and exercise. Mark's main focus is on empowering the patient to improve their symptoms which is very important, the locus of control must remain with the patient. I would highly recommend his work to colleagues and friends and look forward to interacting with him more in the future.

Mark and I first met in fellowship training and built a relationship on commiseration as we struggled to change our practices. We came from similar backgrounds, which lead to similar struggles and revelations. Observing Mark grow over the years has been and continues to be inspiring and very humbling. He demonstrates a passion for understanding and an authentic altruism that is exemplary. Anything that Mark produces for our profession and others embodies everything that is necessary for our optimal growth and development. I trust that it comes from a place of a genuine desire to help people understand and to be better tomorrow than they were yesterday.

Jarod Hall is one of those people that just oozes passion for this profession. In my experience, all of my favorite professors, clinical instructors, and mentors have been extremely passionate. There is generally a correlate of intellect with passion as well, and he is one of the brightest minds I know.
When you combine this level of passion with intellect, you get an extremely effective teacher and mentor. Jarod has always been someone I look up too in this field, and any students and professionals would be extremely lucky to have his guidance through a mentorship!

"I have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Jarod Hall on several projects-both clinical and non-clinical- over the past several years. From the start, it was evident that Jarod was hard working, knowledgeable, and passionate about physical therapy. Through our work on the OPTIM OCS Prep Course, I saw firsthand his expert clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis. He quickly identifies a patient's problems and finds multiple solutions to best serve the individual patient. As our work relationship developed, I quickly resonated with Jarod's 'soft skills' in patient care. He is excellent at identifying a patient's needs, barriers to success, and alternative treatment options. In other words, he is great at treating the whole person and not simply their impairments. These soft skills cannot be learned in a text book, but only developed through mindful repetition and quality mentorship.
If you are searching for clinical mentorship and strategies to improve your clinical performance, work with Dr. Jarod Hall!"

There are many clinicians out there that pretend to know what they are doing and don't take the time to continue to keep up with the latest information and research. That is not the case with Jarod. Jarod takes on learning and teaching with excitement and enthusiastic curiosity and teaches others the most current information about best practices for patient care. Not only does he teach others, he takes complex information and concepts and makes them easy enough for anyone to understand. Talk about an amazing way to teach! I highly recommend taking his courses!

The fact that you get to spend 3 months on expanding your knowledge base through articles and expert webinars together with the Q&A sessions and the mentor calls really has taken me as a therapist to another level. More than a 3 day course could do. I highly recommend this program for anyone working with people with persistent pain. Thanks Mark and Jarod for creating this!

I've interacted with Dr. Jarod Hall for quite some time online and he consistently delivers high quality evidence based physical therapy information which I've been able to immediately use in the clinical setting and improve my quality of care. If Dr. Hall's name is attached to any product you can be certain that it will be a high quality product backed by a substantial amount of evidence. If anyone is looking to improve their orthopedic skills and increase their knowledge of the pain sciences I would highly recommend this mentorship program.
